Hi Super6VCA,

Can you check under HKCU\Software\Policies\Immidio\Flex Profiles\Arguments if the LogFileName registry value exists? If so, does the logged-on user have write permissions in that location?

It's not supported in 6.5 to repoint to a different SSO domain. Redeploy would be your only option there.

v14 should have been called v13 just because of all the bad luck the developers knew it would bring to so many loyal customers.  Then they could have quickly released v14 as the next paid version, which underneath the hood would have merely been v12 relabeled.  I came up with this frivolous bit of levity while uninstalling v14 and reinstalling v12 after reading all of the posts on this site and realizing there was no hope for getting v14 working on my perfectly good Intel i7 system.  v14 seems like VMware's attempt to duplicate the popularity of Windows 8.  Go figure :-)

Are you trying to use the browser based console view? Is the VMware tools installed on the vm?

can you try with VMRC? VMware Knowledge Base

Hi Uridium454,

You have already got the code you need to get the provisioningGroupId which is now the business group id in vRA 7. This is the property named subtenantId within the VM properties you are retrieving.

Add an if statement into your code as part of the for each loop to check whether the property name is subtenantId, and if a match is found return the value of that property and you will have the business group id.

for each(var l in linkEntity){  if(l.getProperty("PropertyName") == "subtenantId"){       var businessGroupId = l.getProperty("PropertyValue");       System.log("businessGroupId: " + businessGroupId);  }  else{       continue;  }
}

Things are pretty strange.  I have all the rights needed to that folder and it shows up in the HKCU but the files are blank.  I delete them and log in again adn it creates the flexengine adnd flexengine-async files but they are both empty.  Any thoughts?

Doh!  A complete oversight on my part.  I forgot about the subtenantId.  Thank you so much for your quick response.  I went back to look at my output, and guess what was hanging out waiting for me?

Thanks again!

Re: Nakivo backup, failed to remove snapshot

I have the same issue, BUT, recreating the backup job entirely on Nakivo still does not resolve the issue.

All was fine until i refreshed my environment, migrated all hosts' compute and storage from vSphere 5.5 w/ a vmfs5 datastore to brand new hosts running 6.5 w/ a vmfs6 datastore. All my other hosts don't seem to have problems (at least 15 hosts are backing up using the same settings in Nakivo). The issue only persists on the VM that acts as my file server with one virtual disk that is GUID (NTFS) and 4 TB. That virtual disk WAS 2 TB when it was on the old vmfs5 datastore.

Nakivo (despite multiple recreations of the backup job from scratch {i.e. not using existing backup chain}) will successfully back up the initial job, but then at some point in the following couple weeks (running incrementals using CBT change tracking every 2 hours) will randomly take 6+ hours to run a backup (despite the usual 5 min. incremental process it has been running since the initial backup) and then freeze on snapshot removal around 45%.

Unfortunately, in my case, this actually LOCKS UP THE ENTIRE HOST that the VM's compute resources are assigned to (including the other VMs on that host. entirely unreachable) until i HARD REBOOT that host.

I'm including my input here in the hopes we all may be able to come to some kind of conclusion for what is going on. I'm currently in the process of bringing up an entirely new file server to replace this VM, creating it from scratch using the new vmfs6 datastore in the hopes that the issue is simply due to the migration from vmfs5 to 6. I also don't believe this is a problem with Nakivo seeing that Nakivo simply sends an API call to vSphere. At that point, everything is in VMware's hands. So, i believe the issue must lie within VMware itself.

please reply or post if you have any insight on this issue.

thanks so much.

As one of our community members explained, you can use the VCSA with same license. If you want to continue with windows installation which is currently exisitng, then please follow the below steps and check if that resolves

Okay, from the logs everytime it fails with cm service and rhttproxy. I believe it is because, you have port 80 or 443 being used by another software on that machine.

open cmd -> netstat -anob |findstr 80 -> check the pid number

Open task manager -> services -> PID (tab) -> find which service is being used.

If it is showing as PID 4 , one of the Microsoft services are using that port which usually is IIS service or a list of other conflicting services mentioned in this.

Maybe performing a FlexEngine.exe -UEMRefresh while is ProcMon running will shed some light on this?

vRLCM 1.2 not passing GitLab access token on check-in

When capturing new content with "check-in" enabled, I get an error on the Content Pipeline

Error: Service https://gitlabs.xxx.yyy/api/v4/projects/133/repository/tree?ref=master&recursive=true&page=1 returned error 404 for GET. id 260813240 message 404 Tree Not Found]

I have verified the access token configured in vRLCM is correct and working by using a browser and going to https://gitlabs.xxx.yyy/api/v4/projects/133?private_token=gJ9oxcaKuFujpxn2CNdz

From the error above it doesn't look like vRLCM is passing the access token when trying to access GitLab.

Ideas?

Re: Rebalance storage load due to unused space

$

Hello Gaute,

Welcome to posting on vSAN Community, I assume you intended to post this as a 'question' as opposed to 'discussion' but nonetheless:

"Could anyone shed any light on how these rebalancing storage load operations would affect the VMs from an availability and performance standpoint?"

Reactive Rebalance would not in any way affect the availability of the underlying data-components - vSAN starts moving data off individual capacity-tier devices once they reach 80% utilised, provided there are disks with utilisation under 80% they can move the data to (at 80% when using default settings - this can be changed but understand what the implications of what you are doing if modifying this).

As with any non-compliance-related-reconfig or 'data-move' vSAN doesn't discard the original data until it has recreated the data in its new location (on a drive <80% used here) - this temporarily uses what could be considered excess space during this process e.g. 3 copies of the data instead of 2 (for FTT=1 data).

Coincidentally this is one of the primary rationales behind why VMware advise 25-30% slack space, so as to allow space for reconfiguring Objects (e.g. changing from FTM RAID-1 to RAID-5 or changing Striping), the other main reason being recovery space in the event of a node/controller/disk-group failure.

"Would it look like the VM is unavailable or just not responding? Would it affect all VMs or just the subset of VMs on the host >80% load?"

No, as per the above this shouldn't have any negative impact aside from the fact that if you have a lot of disparity in usage on disks then it will try to move stuff once individual disks hit 80% and this can add a lot of extra read and write IOs to the cluster - if all is even and at >80% it won't try to move anything (as what would be the point).

"At what additional risk is the VSAN when storage load is at 70% vs 80% used space?"

If you have disks at ~75% and others at 81% it will try to reactive rebalance and this can add a lot of additional reads and writes on the cluster (and without warning and during business hours etc.), provided you are not going crazy changing Storage Policies and understand how the slack space is used when doing this (e.g. not trying to change all data in the cluster at once...) you could potentially be fine with less than the recommended slack space, you only need ~11% to rebuild a single node failure in a 9-node cluster, however going to 89% (in a 9-node) is not recommended for various other reasons such as the fact that you are likely running all Thin-provisioned, no capability to recover from a second failure after the first has rebuilt etc.

I will say that for a 9-node or larger cluster that my personal opinion is that 30% is too conservative but there is a lot of 'it depends' factored into this opinion.

Yes, this is all the same issue. I reported it over a week ago on Twitter and others have added their confirmation. It is being looked into with no ETA of a fix nor anything else. At this point, it's pretty embarrassing that such an issue is allowed to go on for so long.

Virtual machine running and can't shut off or remove

Running a trial version of VMWare workstation 14 pro with Linux Mint 18 as host. Have a virtual machine with Win7 as the guest OS. It's been buggy from the start, so I want to remove it and start over. Buth the "power off" and stop button do not stop it. If I click the win7 machine I get a blank page with the loading (circling) arrow. I've let it run up to 18 minutes but it never does load. I can't uninstall it while it's running, and I can't shut it off. Trying to uninstall workstation gives me the same issues. Can't stop the virtual machine and can't uninstall until I do.

Any help would be most appreciated! Thanks.

Re: HOME LAB DESIGN (NESTED )

Hello singhraj,

"VSAN THREE SITES OR FOUR SITES?"

Do you mean nodes or sites? Minimal set-up for vSAN is 3 nodes (or 2 data-nodes + 1 Witness), if one is talking 'sites' then this usually indicates stretched clusters which consist of 1-15 data-nodes on 2 'sites' + Witness so saying 4 sites makes little sense.

"TWO DATA CENTER LINK MODE (NESTED)

ONE FOR NSX (I DON’T KNOW IF IT BETTER IDEA TO INCLUDE IN BOTH DC?"

Please read the requirements documentation for these products - they require a significant amount of real RAM to function:

vCenter = ~10GB minimum per vCSA (6.x)

https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.0/com.vmware.vsphere.install.doc/GUID-88571D8A-46E1-464D-A349-4DC43DCAF320.html

NSX = ~22GB+ on version 6.2

https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-NSX-for-vSphere/6.2/com.vmware.nsx.install.doc/GUID-311BBB9F-32CC-4633-9F91-26A39296381A.html

vSAN = ~10GB per node with your current cache-tier size configuration:

https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2113954

Basically, you likely don't have the gear to run all of the above so pick and choose - do you want/need a vSAN cluster or do you want/need to test NSX?

You likely can't do both here.

If you want to test these products with zero hardware investment, there is always HOL:

https://labs.hol.vmware.com/

"NETWORK DESIGN?"

There is an abundance of information already available:

https://storagehub.vmware.com/t/vmware-vsan/vmware-r-vsan-tm-network-design/

https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.5/com.vmware.vsphere.virtualsan.doc/GUID-031F9637-EE29-4684-8644-7A93B9FD8D7B.html

Please also consider checking if your caps-lock key is broken (most would just assume you are SHOUTING )

Plugin Version Caching Issue

$

Hello,

I'm having some strange issue with deploying an HTML5 plugin to my vCenter Server.

vSphere Client version 6.5.0.10000 running on Windows Server 2012r2

According to docs if redeploying the same version it's necesary to unregister the plugin and delete the cached files in:

C:\ProgramData\VMware\vCenterServer\cfg\vsphere-client\vc-packages\vsphere-client-serenity\

I've also deleted the files in:

C:\ProgramData\VMware\vCenterServer\cfg\vsphere-ui\vc-packages\vsphere-client-serenity

I use the unregisterPlugin argument with extension-registration-jar-with-dependencies.jar and get a succesful response... the extension no longer shows in the moid extension manager portal either.

The problem is I can't succesfully redeploy using the same version. If I deploy again using registerPlugin (same jar) it gives a succesful response and shows back up in the moid portal but doesn't appear in my vCenter. Nothing shows up in virgo log indicating the plugin is being downloaded either. If I bump the version number of my plugin it will download and deploy succesfully.

Are there some additional cached files I need to remove? or something I'm missing here? It's a pain to have to bump the version number each time I want to test remote deployment.

storage suggestion

Hello everyone,

I'm currently setting up an "old" server with a fresh ESXi install. We need another server to move the hosted exchange back inhouse and get a pbx system up and running within the next weeks. Since we still have hardware available (Xeon E3-1230V3, 16GB RAM) and a license in spare, we "only" need storage...

I already ordered 2x Intel SSD DC 480GB and set those up in a Raid 1 with a simple Adaptec Raid 2405 controller. Now I'm getting nervous wether this is a good idea because of possible issues with garbage collection / TRIM commands.

Can anyone tell me if missing TRIM in a Raid 1 will be a problem in my setup? And yes, what's the better choice? Go for 2x 600GB SAS 15K disks (cheetahs or ultrastar) in Raid 1 + use one SSD as a cache? Or go for a RAID 10 with 4x 15K disks and use the SSD elsewhere? I might have a LSI 9240-8i in spare as well, but I still need to check if it is available and if it is compatible with ESXi 6.7.

Any feedback appreciated!

Thanks

sappel
